Do you struggle to get your child to pay attention, focus and listen during their remote learning classes? If yes, you are not alone. Thousands of parents across the globe are struggling with the very same thing due to the covid pandemic.
Despite the challenges you are facing, there are ways to set your child up for success. Just like with adults, limit any distractions that could interfere with their focus. For example, turn off the TV and limit any background noise from other members of the family who may be on their own web calls. If possible, place the child in their own room, or move their workstation the farthest away from any competing activity or noise.
Another important thing to do is to set them up in an organized, neat workstation with all of their supplies at close hand. Give them regular breaks for water, to use the bathroom, or just a brain break to stand up and stretch or even do a little dance to get out their extra energy. Ensure they’ve eaten a full healthy breakfast and if possible, offer healthy protein based snacks during the day to keep their blood sugar in check. Snacks like cheese sticks, peanut butter and crackers, yogurt, nuts and fresh fruit are all good options. It’s also a great idea to follow a set schedule, and have that schedule written down where your child can follow it. If they are too young to read, you can help them.
Having a schedule along with an environment that is neat, organized and free from distractions will help them to stay on track. Finally, be sure to provide as much positive reinforcement for the times when they are focused and productive. For example, “Wow, you were really paying attention during class. I know your hard work will pay off”, or “Thank you for sitting through your entire class and focusing” It may take some time but with sustained effort you will begin to see real improvements.
By planting the seed for these important life long habits you are helping to set them up for success, both now and in the future.
